WHY 44 MATTERS:The Biological Shift Happening Beneath the Surface

Many people describe the same feeling in their forties. The routines that once worked no longer deliver the same results. Recovery slows. Energy fluctuates. The body feels different. Emerging research suggests this may be more than coincidence.

For decades, ageing was believed to happen gradually, almost imperceptibly, year after year. But a recent study published in Nature Aging paints a different picture.

Researchers followed 108 adults between the ages of 25 and 75, analysing more than 246 billion biological data points across multiple systems, from proteins and metabolites to the skin and gut microbiome. What they found was surprising. More than 80% of the biological markers they measured did not change in a steady, linear way. Instead, they remained relatively stable before shifting rapidly during two distinct periods of life, around the ages of 44 and 60.

The first wave was particularly unexpected. Researchers initially believed the changes might be driven by menopause, but when they analysed men and women separately, the same biological transition appeared in both groups.

Around age 44, significant changes were observed in pathways linked to cardiovascular health, inflammation, lipid metabolism, alcohol metabolism, and muscle health. Rather than simply getting older, the body appeared to be entering a new physiological phase, one that could help explain why so many people begin noticing subtle but meaningful changes during midlife.

These biological shifts often become noticeable long before any diagnosis is made.

Sleep may feel less restorative. Recovery after exercise or illness takes longer. Alcohol becomes harder to tolerate. Stress lingers in the body. Small lifestyle choices that once seemed insignificant begin having a greater impact on energy, mood, skin, and overall wellbeing.

None of this necessarily means something is wrong. It simply means the body is asking for a different level of support than it once did. Understanding this shift is important because it changes the conversation around ageing. Instead of seeing midlife as an inevitable decline, it becomes an opportunity to adapt. To recognise that biology evolves, and that our approach to health should evolve with it.

The goal is not to fear turning forty-four. It is to understand that this stage of life represents a meaningful biological transition. And like any transition, it is easier to navigate when we know what is happening beneath the surface.
