A Doctor’s Perspective onSkin, Hair & Biological Change

Ageing is often spoken about in visual terms. Lines appear. Skin changes. Hair thins. The face evolves. But what we see is only the surface expression of a much deeper process. Beneath these visible signs sits a combination of cellular decline, structural shifts, and hormonal influence, all interacting differently from one person to another. This is why ageing never looks the same, even at the same age. At Ouronyx, understanding these mechanisms is at the core of what we do. Because when we understand why something is changing, we can approach it with far more precision and far less guesswork. We asked our doctors to share how they think about ageing, not as a single event, but as a layered and evolving process, and what that means for how we care for skin and hair over time.

One of the most common misconceptions is that ageing is primarily about what happens at the surface of the skin. In reality, it begins much deeper. From our late twenties, collagen production gradually declines. Over time, this affects skin thickness, elasticity, and the ability to repair. At the same time, the structure of the face itself begins to evolve. Bone density subtly decreases, fat pads shift position, and the ligaments that support the face start to lose strength.

These structural changes are often what drive the visible signs people notice. Not just lines, but changes in contour, volume distribution, and overall facial balance. The same applies to hair. Long before visible thinning appears, follicles may begin to miniaturise, reducing the strength and quality of each strand.

This is where many treatments go wrong. They focus on what is visible, without addressing what is driving it. Understanding ageing at this level changes the approach entirely. It moves the focus away from surface correction and towards deeper, more considered care.

While biological ageing is inevitable, how it presents is heavily influenced by lifestyle and internal health. Stress is one of the most underestimated factors. Chronic elevation of cortisol can accelerate collagen breakdown, impair skin repair, and disrupt the hair growth cycle, often leading to increased shedding or weaker hair over time.

Sleep plays an equally important role. During deep sleep, the body carries out repair processes that support both skin regeneration and follicular health. When sleep is compromised, these processes are affected, and it often shows.

Nutritional status also matters more than people realise. Deficiencies in Vitamin D, iron, or B-complex vitamins can directly impact both skin resilience and hair density. Hormonal changes, particularly during perimenopause and menopause, can further accelerate these shifts, leading to dryness, thinning, and changes in overall structure. This is why ageing isn’t just chronological. It’s biological, and highly individual.

In a landscape where treatments are often presented as quick solutions, it can be tempting to move straight to intervention. But without clarity, intervention becomes reactive, and often ineffective.

At Ouronyx, we always start with understanding. Not to complicate the process, but to make it more precise. Whether through consultation, observation, or diagnostic tools, the aim is to build a clear picture of what is happening, structurally, biologically, and behaviourally.

From there, decisions become more considered. Treatments are more proportionate. Outcomes are more stable. Rather than chasing each visible sign as it appears, the focus shifts towards supporting the underlying processes that drive those changes. Because once you understand the “why,” the “what to do next” becomes significantly clearer, and far more effective over time.

Beyond biology and lifestyle, there is another dimension that is often overlooked, how ageing is perceived and felt. For many patients, the first changes are not just visual, they are emotional. A sense of looking more tired than they feel. A subtle disconnect between how they see themselves and what they see in the mirror. A growing awareness that something is shifting, without always being able to define exactly what.

This is where aesthetic care needs to go beyond technical treatment. At Ouronyx, consultations are not only about identifying physical changes, but also about understanding how those changes are experienced. This allows us to guide patients in a way that feels supportive rather than corrective. It becomes less about chasing an ideal, and more about restoring a sense of alignment.

Because ageing is not just about what is happening to the face or the hair.It is about how confidently and comfortably you recognise yourself within that change. And that ultimately shapes the kind of care that is needed.
